Mercedes-Benz exec promises C-Class convertible
Mercedes-Benz is already at work on the next-generation C-Class sedan, but USA Today reports that the automaker promises to add a convertible model for to the mix as well and will offer it in the US. The new C-Class is expected out next year as a 2014 model, and it will be the first time the C-Class has ever directly offered a drop-top model, likely to be called the C-Class Cabriolet.
Previously, the CLK-Class acted as a convertible based on the smaller C-Class, but it was sized and generally thought of as an E-Class model. There are no concrete details about this new car, but it's almost certain to be the most affordable convertible in the Mercedes lineup, priced less than the $42,900 SLK-Class roadster and well below the $59,070 E-Class Cabriolet. Cars such as the C-Class Cabriolet and the all-new CLA-Class are an attempt to draw younger buyers into the Mercedes family, according to Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA.
In addition to the new C-Class convertible, USA Today also says that Mercedes plans a total of 19 new or refreshed models (including 11 in new-to-Mercedes segments) by 2020.

Mercedes Benz confirms compact SUV based on the A-Class
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it will build a new compact SUV based on the versatile MFA platform, which underpins the new A-Class and soon to be launched B-Class. The modular front-wheel-drive platform will enable German manufacturer to keep costs in check and position the new model to compete with the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3.
The news was confirmed at Mercedes’ Rastatt plant in Germany, where the crossover will be produced along with the A-Class, B-Class and other upcoming entry-level models. The new model is expected to be called the GLA, based on Mercedes philosophy – wherein GL stands for SUV and the A denoting its small size. No details about the launch have been confirmed and we are not expecting this model to be production ready before 2014. However, the car might make debut in concept form at one of the more significant Motor Shows, early next year.
The GLA will get both petrol and diesel options, powering the front wheels, while a more powerful all-wheel-drive version might also be rolled-out to compete with the Q3 Quattro and X1 xDrive. The new model will also be the first crossover to get sleek and aggressive new Mercedes styling, seen in their new range of cars like the CLC and the new A-Class.
The compact crossover is one of the missing links in the Mercedes range and also one of the important products for the Merc’s 2020 growth strategy. This segment has seen significant growth in recent past and Mercedes has been losing numbers to its German rivals due to lack of appropriate product.
As for India – this model will be made available here immediately after global launch, looking at its rivals’ numbers. The X1 is the highest selling model for BMW in India, while Audi sold 500 units of the Q3 within one week of the launch.
